Acting on the directive of the Inspector General of Police (IGP), Kayode Egbetokun, the Lagos State Police Command has contacted the leadership of the Human Rights Monitoring Agenda (HURMA Global Resource) through the office of its Executive Director, Comrade Buna Olaitan Isiak, to communicate the Nigeria Police Force’s readiness to investigate the petition concerning the alleged murder of Ayayi Michael in the Alimosho area of Lagos State by political associates of the ruling party, APC.
HURMA had earlier petitioned the IGP, raising serious concerns about the murder allegation and the apparent unwillingness of the Nigerian Police Force to investigate the matter. The petition, signed by HURMA Executive Director Comrade Buna and titled “Petition Regarding Alleged Murder of Ajayi Michael by Abiodun Ejigbadero and His Accomplices,” highlighted the urgent need for justice in the case and the troubling situation in Alimosho LCDA.
“As a mass-based NGO and anti-corruption body committed to equity and justice, HURMA is deeply concerned about the safety and well-being of the Alimosho community,” the petition stated. “Concerns have been raised by the paramount ruler of the community, Chief Adedayo Badeyemo Oki (Baale of Oki Kingdom – Ilufemiloye 1), and residents regarding the violent actions of Abiodun Ejigbadero and his group.
“Ejigbadero, a prominent figure in the ruling APC government in Lagos State, has been accused of terrorizing landlords, shop owners, and other residents by imposing levies, fines, and inflicting physical harm. He claims to be the Baale and owner of all land in the area.
“Despite widespread complaints and calls for action, the government and law enforcement agencies appear unable to hold Ejigbadero accountable.
“On April 16, 2024, Ejigbadero led a group of armed thugs to attack members of the National Union of Road Transport Workers at the Iyana Ipaja branch. This attack resulted in the death of Ajayi Michael and injuries to others.
“The police have arrested and released key individuals involved, including Ejigbadero, the local council chairman, and others. However, no substantial actions have been taken to pursue justice for the deceased and his family.
“We respectfully request your immediate action to ensure that justice is served for Ajayi Michael and his family.”
A copy of the petition was also sent to the President and Commander-in-Chief of Nigeria, His Excellency Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu, through the Chief of Staff to the President, Rt. Hon. Femi Gbajabiamila.
In a recent public address, HURMA commended the Nigeria Police Force for its reliable and unbiased action. HURMA has also directed the affected family, through the palace of the Paramount Ruler of Oki Kingdom, Chief Adedayo Badeyemo Oki, to meet with the officer in charge at the Lagos Police Command.
