The Human Rights Monitoring Agenda (HURMA Global Resource Initiative) a mass based Human Rights and Anti-Corruption organization with head quarters in Lagos State has sent a welcome letter with note of caution to the new leadership of the Lagos State House of Assembly to be people’s conscious and avoid the old style of political rascality.
This was contained in a letter to the new Speaker, Rt. Hon. Mojisola Lasbat Meranda by HURMA signed by the Executive Director, Comrade Buna Olaitan Isiak titled:
“Our Welcome Letter And Caution Note to The Hon. Speaker And Other Principal Officers of LSHA…
“The letter reads in part:
“HURMA on behalf of entire Lagos indigenes and residents wants to hereby call your attention, as a kind of reminder, to your expected roles in the service to the people rather than seeing these esteemed offices as opportunity for personal enrichment. This is a kind of alertness while we as well propose a collaborative visit to the honourable office of the new Speaker.
“HURMA as an organization amongst others has the responsibility to monitor the Lagos State Assembly legislative functions and responsibilities, we shall therefore be reminding you of same from time to time and we expect this to be appreciated by the Honourable House without any negative view.
“It is expected of you among others to be good listeners, accommodating, tolerant and not fall into a blind arrogance of power. A true leader must fully embrace the politics of participation, accommodation and accountability. Social justice, equality and fairness must therefore serve as the hallmark of political conducts and activities of members of the Lagos State House of Assembly.
“HURMA wish to inform you, from past studies that politics is not war and it is not a dirty game. Only dirty people make it look dirty. You cannot silence criticism and opposition. Disagreements are usual in politics. It is the maturity of the leaders and actors that often determine the dynamics and direction of politics. When politicians fail to acknowledge their obligations to the state, the constitution and the people, they become politically careless, reckless and irresponsible.
“Our advice to the new leadership is to avoid the old style of politics, avoid political rascality and indiscipline.
“It is disheartening to read the negative picture in which this honorable House was recently painted by a Nigerian social critic:
“Obasa’s impeachment is not about corruption because it’s the same useless corruption ridden LSHA that defended and protected him all these years with efcc becoming blind, deaf & dumb”.
“HURMA hereby appeal to your honorable office not to betray the trust of the common people nor contribute to the pains they already suffer. Be part of the good dreams and hopes of our people.
“We encourage dialogue, sensitivity to the poor, efficiency, social justice for all and the fear of God. The future of our people, our communities and our state is in your hands. Please, do not corrupt, contaminate or compromise that future”.
